About Us

№ 1. We're NumeroSign.

You know that little "" that sometimes shows up instead of the word number? We love those—they're tiny, beautiful, and effective. In fact, we like those little buggers so much that we named ourselves for them.

So we're NumeroSign, and, like our namesake, we're just old-fashioned enough to be kinda cool (Exhibit A: we still hyphenate e-mail!). We have a small footprint and a big purpose: hand-coding websites that are compact, easy to use and hard to forget.

Plus, we're dedicated to social and environmental reponsibility, and we care enough about those goals to discount our services for those whose work we want to support and encourage. We think that makes us especially awesome.

№ 2. Sustainable web design. Really.

Almost everyone's “sustainable” these days. That word's everywhere and it hardly seems to mean anything anymore. So we understand how "Sustainable Web Design" sounds, but it really is the way we do things.

Here's how it works: We believe that everything you do affects everything else. That means if you drive a Hummer fifteen miles to work, throwing coffee cups and muffin wrappers out the window as you go, it dirties whatever you do when you get there—even if your job is planting trees. The Hummer and the garbage are the collateral cost of those trees, and that sort of really bums us out.

№s 3 – 6,289.

So you do what you can, and not just the easy stuff. You work hard to minimize the collateral impact of your work. That's why we rely on public transit, code on Energy Star-certified computers, power the studio with wind-sourced electricity, buy local produce from local sellers, use a hybrid car when it's too crappy outside to bike, and strive to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

So that's how we do it. Take a look at what we do. We're awful gosh-darn proud of it.

Our Portfolio

About Our Work.

We make little websites with a lot of impact—and a lot of heart. Our sites are striking, standards compliant, and accessible to the disabled. To us, these aren't niceties or big-hearted accommodations. We believe that every site should be accessible to all, because the internet is for everyone, not just people who can see or grasp a mouse. The Difference Between Hand-Coding and Code Generators The only way to ensure that everything is how is should be is to code each site entirely by hand, line for line. That's what we do.

At left you can see the difference between the text a screen reader would read aloud for site that was hand-coded versus one created by an automated code generator. Which would you rather listen to? There are lots of ways that hand-coded sites are better. Please take a moment to see some of the others.

Standards & Accessibility.

Just like "sustainability," the term "web standards" is grievously overused. Maybe we have a thing about believing in buzzwords, but we feel almost as strongly about web standards as we do about Ol' Ma Earth, which is why all of our sites meet meet or exceed every major web standard, such as the W3C's XHTML & CSS specifications, as well as U.S. Government Section 508 and the Web Accessibility Initiative's best practice recommendations.

So, here's the deal.

We know that making a commitment to sustainable practices isn't easy. Or cheap. So we want to make it a little easier. If you run a business that's serious about protecting the environment, we'd like to offer you 20% off any service we offer. Redeemable anytime. Just fill out the form below to get started.

And even if you're not Greeney McEcoPants, you can get 10% off—just make a donation of at least fifty bucks to any of these causes. You'll almost certainly save more money than you donate, and get to help ol' Ma Earth in the process. Everbody wins.
